If you need to change a patient's insurance for any reason, first add the new policy to the patient's record. Then, update any applicable purchases to use the new insurance policy.
Here's how to update insurance on existing purchases:
1. Navigate to a purchase for the patient whose insurance needs to be updated.
2. Open the Insurance drop down on the purchase for the policy that needs replacing.

3. Click Remove to remove the old policy from the purchase.

If you currently have Auto-Apply enabled for this policy, you'll be prompted to turn off the policy's auto-apply settings upon removal.

4. Select your new policy from the drop-down to add it to this purchase.

5. When you select a new policy to add to the purchase, you can configure auto-apply settings for Future Check-ins (which can be updated at anytime in the Insurance tab of the patient's record).
- Auto-apply at all future check-ins: ChiroUp will automatically apply this policy to all future visits for this patient.
- Auto-apply at future check-ins for specific appointment types or providers: Configure advanced auto-apply settings to apply only to appointments with selected appointment types or providers.
- Do no auto-apply: Never auto-apply this policy to future visits. This is useful when making one-off updates.
You can also choose to add this policy to other existing purchases.
- Select the other purchases you would like to update with this insurance policy.
6. Click Save!

In this example, you'll see this patient's purchases have all been updated to Aetna insurance.

💡Pro Tip:
ChiroUp uses the Insurance Type field (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, or Other) to determine where a policy falls in the billing order when you're updating insurance policies on existing purchases.
For example, a patient has:
- Primary: Medicare
- Secondary: AARP Medicare Supplement
Later, you learn the patient actually has:
- Primary: Medicare
- Secondary: UHC Medicare Supplement
First, add the UHC Medicare Supplement policy as Secondary (you may need to change the AARP policy to Other if it is still assigned as Secondary). Then, when you update a purchase by removing the old AARP policy and adding the UHC policy, ChiroUp will recognize that UHC is the Secondary policy and prompt you to replace AARP on the remaining dates of service with UHC as the secondary policy. That means there's no need to remove and re-add the policy for each date of service - ChiroUp will prompt you to easily replace!
